Pandaemonian - Scribbles on the Pan Book of Horror Stories Collection

For anyone interested in the Pan Books of Horror I have just come across a great site, which covers all of the books, their stories and covers: Pandaemonian - Scribbles on the Pan Book of Horror Stories Collection.

I particularly liked the write-up of the Eleventh Pan Book of Horror Stories, since I had a story in that one:

THE LURKERS IN THE ABYSS
By David A. Riley

Ian Redford is making his way home from the library after dark when he encounters a group of youths looking for trouble.  Following a brief but violent struggle he breaks free, but is chased into a graveyard.  Taking refuge in a disused building, he soon discovers there are worse things in the world than fist-wielding thugs.

A quality piece of writing this one, with Riley effortlessly creating a threateningly sinister town, Pire, set in a dystopian not too distant future.  Marvelously evocative descriptive prose abounds with much of the narrative a remember-to-breathe-when-reading roller-coaster ride.

The Lurkers, when they finally put in an appearance are a truly loathsome bunch, and I should not be surprised if they turned up in some of the author’s subsequent writing.  Indeed, I think may actively go seeking them out.

If I do have a criticism of the story, it is that old chestnut: characterisation.  For although the author does attempt to imbue Redford with some character – he reads “Escapist fiction” to help escape the monotony of his daytime job, and we learn he is saving hard for a car – ultimately I found it difficult to engage with the running man.

But this is a minor quibble with a really rather memorable yarn.

Pan Book of Horror Stories Scrapbook - Kickstarter Campaign

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1027049759/the-pan-book-of-horror-stories-scrapbook
Johnny Mains has started a kickstarter campaign to raise funds to publish a lavish, in-depth scrapbook on the Pan Book of Horror Stories. So far, with 55 backers, he has pledges totalling £2,584. The target is £5,000 and there are another 19 days to go.  Whether this figure will be achieved is anyone's guess at the moment, but it is within reach.

I must admit to a bit of a vested interest in this as I was in the Eleventh Pan Book of Horror Stories with my first ever professionally published story, The Lurkers in the Abyss, which went on to be chosen by John Pelan for his two-part anthology, The Century's Best Horror Fiction (Cemetery Dance, 2012). It is also the title story for my collection from Shadow Publishing, The Lurkers in the Abyss and Other Tales of Terror (2013).

If you are interested in this scrapbook being published, just click on this link. Full details are there.

COPIED FROM THE SITE:

"A complete history of The Pan Book of Horror Stories, the infamous anthology series which ran from 1959-1989.
THE PAN BOOK OF HORROR STORIES SCRAPBOOK will be the result of 5 years in-depth research into this series which has haunted and thrilled me since I was thirteen years old.

The funds collected for this book will be put towards the following things:
There is still some more research needed and people to interview
Getting a high quality artists to do the book cover and illustrations.
Paying for a professional proof reader.
High-res scanning of artwork, photos, letters etc.
Printing of the actual books which will be to the highest standards available.
The cult of the Pan Horrors continues to fascinate, more than 55 years after they were first published and 25 years after the last volume hit the shelves. This book aims to publish the definitive history of the series, its editors, its authors - with as much information and paperwork that I've been able to gather together since 2009.
I've still got a lot of work to do on it, so have given myself the publication date of December 2015. It's a bit of a wait, but I'm working on this on my own, and have a full time job plus editing the Best British Horror series for Salt Publishing.
I'm the only person I know of bonkers enough to attempt a book such as this, and the main reason I want to do it is so I can be the first person to read it!
This will be a book for any fan of horror, its authors, the history of publishing, social history in a wider context and how a gentleman called Herbert van Thal created a series of books which has been ingrained into the national psyche."

The Lurkers in the Abyss & Others

Just a brief update on my collection, which may be delayed till the end of the year for reasons out of the control of my publisher. The first story in the collection will be the title story, which first appeared in the 11th Pan Book of Horror and was recently reprinted in Cemetery Dance's massive 2-volume anthology The Century's Best Horror Fiction, edited by John Pelan. The final story, and the only one not previously published, will be Lurkers, which is a sequel to The Lurkers in the Abyss (and just over twice its length).

Portrait of Herbert van Thal

The always surprising Johnny Mains posted this copy of a painting created for him of the late Herbert van Thal, legendary first editor of the Pan Book of Horror series. The painting is the work of Les Edwards.

If you look closely, though, you'll see another face staring out at you.

Mr Mains himself in all his fiendish glory.

The Pan Book of Horror Stories

Congratulations to my friend Johnny Mains, who has single handedly been responsible for Pan reissuing their very first Pan Book of Horror Stories, just over 50 years after it was originally published. The only difference is the size of the book, which is larger than the original, and the inclusion of an introduction by Johnny all about the Pan series.

This is a picture of the advance copies Johnny was sent:

Let's hope that this is a great success and Pan are encouraged by it to restart the series. With Johnny Mains at the helm!
