Patrick Woodroffe - 1940-2014

I was saddened to learn of the death of the great fantasy artist Patrick Woodroffe on the 10th May. I'll always remember the cover he did for the Corgi edition of The Satyr's Head and Other Tales of Terror in 1975, illustrating my title story more vividly than I could have ever imagined. His iconic artwork graced the covers of numerous fantasy novels, as well as record sleeves. There was never any mistaking his work, it was so outstandingly characteristic.

One of my prized possessions is his book Mythopoeikon, which contains some of his best artwork from the 60s and 70s

The Satyr's Head - review comments

I came across a review for The Mammoth Book of Terror edited by Stephen Jones, which included my story The Satyr's Head, recently reprinted by Dave Sutton in The Satyr's Head: Tales of Terror.

I particularly liked: "It’s perverted and repulsive, taboo breaking and hard to read at times, and must have been at the cutting edge of ‘70s horror fiction, because it still packs a punch even now."

The Satyr's Head: Tales of Terror

There have been a couple of reviews of this collection: Shiny Short Fiction and The Black Abyss.

My favourite bit is where my story is described as reading "like a lovechild of M. R. James and Dennis Wheatley". I might not completely agree with this, but I love it.

The Satyr's Head: Tales of Terror edited by David A. Sutton

Received my contributor's copy from Dave Sutton in the post yesterday and was delighted to see what a splendid job he has done of it. If this is an example of what Shadow Publishing will be bringing out, then it should be a great success. Forthcoming titles include:

The Female of the Species & Other Terror Tales: Writers from the Shadows series #1 is a first collection of short stories by Richard Davis. Due April 2012

Frightfully Mild and Cosy Stories for Nervous Types: A second collection from Johnny Mains. Shadow Publishing is delighted to be able to publish Johnny's second collection of horror yarns. The book will contain 16 stories, some reprinted from various sources and some new to this collection. Due Autumn 2012

Temple of the Fox: Writers from the Shadows series #2 is a first collection of the stories of James Wade.

The Shadow Book of Horror will be an anthology of new and obscure genre stories. "Phantoms of Venice", "Voices From Shadow" and "On the Fringe for Thirty Years" are currently in print and available.

This is the first new edition of the long out of print Transworld/Corgi Book "The Satyr's Head & Other Tales of Terror", first published in 1975. “The Nightingale Floors were part of a crumbling Chicago museum and only the brave or the foolish ventured there after dark. The building had a weird history – and no night watchman stayed there long...”
“Winnie was The Prefect Lady and Rupert loved every little bit of her. But when the neighbours saw her at close quarters, panic spread through Lavender Hill...”
“Aunt Hester had strange powers. Her ability to transfer herself into the body of her twin brother had a hideous ending – or was it a beginning?”
“Lamson was intrigued by The Satyr’s Head. He bought the little relic from an old tramp. It brought him nightmares, disease and, worst of all, unnatural passion from a foul incubus...”
